You’ve looked for a male counsellor, and you’ll have a reason for that, whether you could put it into words or not. Maybe some things feel easier to say to a man. Maybe it’s a woman you’ve tried talking to and something closed over. Maybe it’s men you want to think about: your own father, fatherhood, the whole shape of it. Whatever the reason, it’s a good enough place to start.
I work online, right across the UK, from wherever you are. If you’d like to find out whether we’d work well together, the first step is a free phone call. Nothing more than that, and you can decide where it goes from there.
Why a male counsellor
People choose a male counsellor for all sorts of reasons, and none of them needs explaining to me. Some people find it easier to begin with a man, particularly with the things that are bound up with being a man in the first place.
Some want a man there precisely because of what they’re working through: a relationship, a father, something about men they’d rather look at than talk around. Whoever you are, you’ve made a considered choice, and I’ll meet you as you come.
And if it’s individual counselling you want and the who matters less, you might start with my individual counselling page.
How I work
I work relationally, which in plain terms means I’m interested in what happens between us, and in what happens between you and the people who matter to you, rather than treating you as a fault to be corrected. I won’t be measuring you against how a man’s supposed to be.
Whatever you bring, I’ll hear it, and it won’t ruffle me. Sexuality, gender, the things you’re not sure you’re allowed to say out loud: none of it is new ground, and none of it changes how I’ll meet you. That steadiness is most of what the work rests on.
What people often bring
People arrive with all sorts. Often it’s something to do with fathers, or being a parent. Work, and what it’s meant to prove. Anger that’s started to worry you. A flatness where feeling used to be, or a sense of going through the motions of a life that looks fine from the outside. Men’s mental health carries a particular weight here: the habit of managing alone until managing stops working. You don’t need to have any of it worked out before you get in touch. Working it out is the point.
How online works, wherever you are
We meet by video call, at a time that fits round your week. All you need is somewhere private and a reliable connection. Working online means I’m not limited to those near Bude, so I see people right across the UK, and some further afield. For many of the people I work with, doing this in their own space, on their own terms, is part of what makes it possible at all. You’re not walking into anywhere. You’re letting someone in on your own ground, and you can end the call if you need to.
Fees – In person, Bude
- Individuals £60
- Couples £95
- Children and young people £40
My fees for working in person in Bude are lower than my online fees, and that’s on purpose. Cornwall is one of the lower-income parts of the country, and I don’t want the cost to be the thing that stops a local person from sitting in the room with me.
Fees – Online, UK
- Individuals £75
- Couples £120
Common questions
Does online counselling work as well as being in the same room?
For most people, yes. A few minutes in, the screen tends to stop mattering and the conversation is just the conversation. Much of what makes counselling work, being properly listened to and met without judgement, comes through as clearly online as face to face. If it turns out not to suit you, we’ll say so.
Do I need to know what’s wrong before I get in touch?
No. Most people don’t, or they’ve a rough sense of it that shifts once they start talking. You don’t have to arrive with it tidied up. Turning up unsure is a perfectly good place to begin.
Do you only work with men?
No. The search that brings people here says male counsellor, so it’s often men who find me this way, but I work with anyone who wants a man to talk to, whatever their own reason for that. You’re welcome whoever you are.
Where in the UK do you work with people?
Anywhere in the UK, and beyond it. Online means where you live isn’t the deciding factor; a private space and a reliable connection are all it takes. I’m based in Bude, in Cornwall, but the online work isn’t tied to the South West.
What happens on a free phone call?
We talk for a bit, no charge and no pressure. You can tell me as much or as little as you like about what’s bringing you, ask me anything you want to know, and get a feel for whether I’m the right person. If it’s not a fit, I’ll happily point you elsewhere. If it is, we’ll arrange a first session.
Not sure if it’s right for you? Let’s talk first.
The best way to find out whether we’re a good fit is with a free phone call. No cost, no pressure, just a chance to tell me what’s going on and ask anything you want before you decide. If it feels right, we book a first session from there.
