The other day I tried out an AI therapy app. I typed in a simple message:
“I am scrolling too much, I can’t get out of bed.”
The reply looked impressive at first glance. It came back with long sentences, comforting words, even a suggestion that I might be depressed. But as I read it, something felt wrong.
The app was making assumptions about me, edging towards a diagnosis, and offering a false sense of empathy. If I had given a response like that during my counselling training, I would have been told to stop practising immediately.
Why? Because care is not just words on a screen.
The Illusion of Care
Apps like this create what I call an illusion of care. They can copy the language of therapy, but there is no accountability, no safeguarding, no trained professional behind the words.
It might feel soothing for a few moments, but there is no one really there. No one who notices the hesitation in your voice. No one who sits with you in silence when words are too hard. No one who can gently help you find your own next step.
What Real Therapy Offers
Therapy is not about quick advice or labels. It is about relationship. It is about being met as a whole person, not a set of symptoms.
In a safe therapeutic space:
- You are met with curiosity, not assumptions.
- You are understood in the context of your life, not given a diagnosis by a script.
- You are accompanied as you face what feels overwhelming, not reassured with empty words.
This is what helps change to happen. Real listening. Real connection. A safe place where you do not have to carry everything alone.
If You Are Struggling
If you recognise yourself in that message about scrolling or struggling to get out of bed, please know that you are not the only one who feels this way. Life can be heavy at times, and it can take courage even to reach out.
Therapy provides a space to pause, untangle what is going on beneath the surface, and take small, steady steps forward.
I offer a warm and confidential space where we can work together at your pace.
